#Positively Stressed - Week 1
Week 1
I am an attorney, non-combat disabled veteran, cancer survivor, husband, girl-dad, dog-dad, and community board member.
I live with significant anxiety and sometimes depression about most of those aspects of my life. I’ve been in mental health counseling for about half my life – and I still have problems.
Why am I saying all of this?
Because stress in today’s world is a given for those of us who strive to do good for our communities and families.
Because per VA’s reports, an average of 18-22 veterans take their own lives every day.
Because the legal profession, first responders, healthcare professionals, and educators face many of the same challenges when it comes to vicarious trauma (living the trauma of others) alongside their own traumas causing clinical burnout, anxiety/depression, substance abuse issues, and the like. That doesn’t even touch the cyclical poverty-related stress that those in other professions deal with.
Modern society needs to change how we discuss these issues and how they affect our lives, our relationships, and the world around us. It also means that we need to know when to give some grace to one another and when to not put up with other’s BS.
Over the next year (~52 weeks), my goal will be to engage with this community regarding different aspects of #Stress – from its purpose, types of stress, positive coping techniques, and the issues with negative coping techniques - and provide referrals to AMAZING organizations who focus on mental health and what they do in their communities. All while - admittedly - I am not a health professional.
If you have any organizations (big or small) that you would like included, please let us know!
